PERFORMANCE AND LIMITATIONS
Performance
Wood rosin can be used to make a clear transparent varnish when dissolved in a solvent oil blend with the addition of
driers. When the varnish dries, its solvent portion evaporates and the remaining constituents oxidise to form a durable
transparent film.
The early varnishes were solutions of natural resin, adding natural oils as in linseed oil or tung oil, cooking the mixture to
the desired viscosity and then diluting with vegetable or mineral turpentine. These varnishes provide a protective coating
for wooden surfaces, paintings and various decorative objects. however natural varnishes have been replaced by varnishes
containing synthetic resins.
