What is Shellac?
Shellac is a natural product used in many industries including textiles, cosmetics, food and paint but often little is known about this product.
A naturally occurring product Shellac is produced by a tiny insect called a Lac Beetle. Starting as minuscule larvae the Lac Beetles seek out new succulent shoots on special host trees. Clustering together the Lac Beetles suck the sap from the new shoots using their proboscis whilst secreting a purpley red resin. The resin forms a crust around the brood of larvae protecting them from heat and predators whilst they mature.
It is this resinous secretion which gives us Shellac, and it takes about 10,000 Lac beetles to produce 1 kilo of Shellac. By harvest time the branches of the host tree are encrusted with this resinous secretion, called stick-lac. Growers scrape the stick lac from the branches to on sell to agents and producers. The quantity and quality of each harvest is influenced by the health of the host tree and climatic conditions.

Protectoil : Test Pots
At last, there's an easier way to preserve and protect the natural beauty of timber around your home. Protectoil is an exterior finish that weatherproofs, protects against borer, inhibits fungus and mould, enhances and colours timber, all in one! You can use Protectoil with complete confidence on any dressed or rough sawn timber - decks and pool surrounds, weatherboards, pergolas, outdoor furniture, fences and gates, even windows.
Protectoils simple, two-coat formula gives tough, long-lasting protection; the first coat penetrates deep into the timber to colour and preserve; the second remains on the surface, leaving a durable, wax-like film that withstands the harshest climatic conditions. That's why Protectoil is chosen by ski clubs to protect timber against the damaging effects of snow and ice.
Order one of three test pot colours; Clear, Brown and Vandyke to test out its effects before you choose your prefered colour.
